Bach Flowers & ADHD

Even though Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has been around for a very long time, there remain many misconceptions about the condition.  Many sufferers and their families still refer to the condition as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a chronic condition that usually requires long-term intervention and medication.  The condition is impairing and touches every aspect of the person’s social and emotional being.  Often ADHD patients suffer long-term consequences.  ADHD is not gender specific.

Some Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder patients suffer from learning disabilities or have other emotional or nervous disorders.  There are three types of ADHD patients:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Type
  • Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
  • Combines Type

Research continues to identify the best treatments for the ADHD condition which primarily, but not exclusively, affects the young.  In the early 20th century Dr. Edward Bach developed 38 flower essences and began to use combinations of these essences to treat emotionally disturbed or distressed patients.

The alternative solution gained support because results were positive, the medications had no after effects and the medications were not addictive.  These same qualities exist today.

Over the past 70 years, Bach Flower Essences have continued to be used by thousands of patients.  As many of today’s ADHD medications have strong side effects and whereas some are addictive, the BACH alternative continues to be in demand.

Each of Bach’s 38 flower remedies were designed to address one of the seven psychological causes of illness:

  • Fear
  • Uncertainty
  • Insufficient interest
  • Loneliness
  • Oversensitivity
  • Despondency
  • Despair

Remedies were only prescribed after consultation with a Bach practitioner, which determined the severity of the condition.  All prescriptions require six applications per day.  Each application consists of four drops each.  As the medication has no after effects, many patients take more than six doses per day.

Applications are dispersed with an eyedropper that arrives with the treatment bottle.  Some patients take Bach Flower Essences with tea, coffee, water or with juices.

The Bach alternative system works through the life force that addresses negative feelings in the patient’s psychological composition.  Bach Flower Essences strive to ease the psychological condition so that physical rehabilitation can proceed.

In addition to the therapeutic remedies provided by Bach Flower Essences, many patients use the medication for relief of pain.  The most famous Bach Flower Essence is Dr. Bach’s own original “Five Flower Remedy.”  This 70 year old flower essence combination functions as an all-purpose remedy in situations where acute anxiety or distress have overcome the sufferer.

Bach Flower Essence practitioners are trained by the Bach Foundation in the United Kingdom and in Europe.  Many of these practitioners work in alternative health care and seek to add Bach Flower essences to their existing practices.  In many countries, Bach Flower Essences are available as “over-the-counter” remedies.  Bach Flowers maintains records of all testimonials and is happy to furnish interested parties with these cases.
